Summer is a great time to spend time outside, travel, and make memories with family
and friends. While you're enjoying your break, it's also important to take care of your health. This July, TogetherMed focused on four health topics: UV Safety Awareness Month, Chronic Disease Self-Management, Healthy Sleep Tips, and International Self-Care Day.Here's a look at what we learned.
Stay Safe in the Sun
Summer means more time outside, but it also means more exposure to the sun's UV rays. Too much UV exposure can cause sunburns, damage your skin, and increase your risk of skin cancer later in life.
Here are a few simple ways to protect yourself:
Wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher whenever you're outside.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating.
Wear sunglasses, a hat, and lightweight clothing that covers your skin.
Try to stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Remember that UV rays can still reach you on cloudy days.
Taking a few extra minutes to protect your skin can make a big difference in the future.
Managing Chronic Diseases
Many people live with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases. These conditions often require ongoing care, but they do not have to stop people from living healthy and active lives.
Some ways to manage a chronic disease include:
Taking medications as directed.
Going to regular doctor appointments.
Staying active when possible.
Eating balanced, nutritious meals.
Keeping track of symptoms and talking with healthcare providers about any changes.
Asking family, friends, or support groups for help when needed.
Managing a chronic condition is all about building healthy habits and making choices that support your well-being over time.
Why Sleep Matters
Sleep plays a huge role in your physical and mental health. Getting enough sleep helps your brain stay focused, strengthens your immune system, improves your mood, and gives your body time to recover.
Here are a few healthy sleep habits:
Go to bed and wake up around the same time every day.
Avoid using your phone or other screens before bed.
Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
Limit caffeine later in the day.
Create a relaxing bedtime routine by reading, stretching, or listening to calming music.
Even small changes to your sleep routine can help you feel more rested each day.
Celebrating International Self-Care Day
International Self-Care Day is celebrated every year on July 24. It reminds us that taking care of ourselves is an important part of staying healthy. Self-care is not about being perfect. It is about making time for habits that support your physical and mental well-being.
Self-care can be as simple as:
Drinking enough water.
Going for a walk.
Spending time with friends and family.
Taking breaks when you feel stressed.
Practicing mindfulness or deep breathing.
Doing something you enjoy.
Getting enough sleep and eating nutritious foods.
Even a few minutes of self-care each day can have a positive impact on your health.
At TogetherMed, we believe everyone deserves access to free, reliable, and easy-to-understand health education. Whether you're protecting your skin from the sun, getting better sleep, managing a chronic condition, or making time for self-care, small healthy habits can make a big difference.
